Overview
The Bolonka was developed in the Soviet Union after the Second World War, when small companion dogs were scarce and city flats were cramped. Breeders crossed Bichon types, Lhasa Apsos, Toy Poodles and others to produce a sturdy little dog with a wavy or curly coat in any colour except white, which separates it from the Bolognese.
It is a steady, sociable little dog that likes people and generally gets on with other dogs. It is rare in Britain but gaining a following for being low-shedding and less fragile than some toy breeds. For a walker it is straightforward: a short walk, a bit of play and attention to the weather.
Exercise and walking needs
Two walks adding up to around forty minutes suit most adults. They are more robust than they look and enjoy a brisk stretch and a sniff, but they are not built for distance.
Indoor games count. A few minutes of fetch down a hallway or hide-and-seek with treats makes up for a short walk on a foul day.
On the walk
- Recall: Usually good within a short range; they stay close by preference. Enclosed areas are the sensible choice for a dog this size.
- Other dogs: Friendly and curious. Supervise greetings with big dogs so enthusiasm does not turn into injury.
- Lead: Use a soft harness. Collars press on a small neck and the dog is light enough to be yanked off its feet.
- Coat: The wavy coat tangles and collects debris. Avoid brambles and deep mud if you want to stay in the owner's good books.
Tips for professional walkers
- Carry a small towel; a wet Bolonka is a very damp armful.
- Watch for a skip in the back leg, which in small breeds can point to a slipping kneecap worth mentioning to the owner.
- Keep to the dog's routine; these were bred for domestic life and like predictability.
- Lift the dog across busy roads or past off-lead dogs that worry it.
What to ask the owner
- Has the dog had any patella or dental problems?
- Does it wear a coat in winter, and how does it cope with cold rain?
- What grooming schedule is the dog on, and should you avoid mud in the days before a groom?
