Overview
The Giant Schnauzer is the biggest of the three schnauzers and a different proposition from the other two. It is a square, muscular black or pepper and salt dog of up to 47 kilos, with the family beard and eyebrows and a coat that needs regular stripping or clipping. It was bred in Bavaria to drive stock and guard property, and later to work alongside the police and military.
That history gives you a dog that is sharp, loyal and quick to decide who belongs and who does not. It is not aggressive by default, but it takes its guarding role seriously and will test a handler it does not respect.
Exercise and walking needs
A couple of hours a day of varied exercise is about right for an adult, with a mixture of brisk lead work, free running where safe and some training. Mental work is not optional; a bored Giant finds its own projects.
Young dogs should not be over-run. Build fitness gradually and avoid long sessions on hard ground until the owner confirms the vet is happy with growth.
On the walk
- Pulling: Enormous strength and leverage. Use whatever equipment the owner has established and do not let a group walk turn into a tug of war.
- Strangers: Aloof, and may stand between you and an approaching person. Keep greetings calm and controlled, and never leave the dog tied outside a shop.
- Other dogs: Often fine with familiar dogs and dismissive of strange ones, though same-sex tension is common. Choose walking companions carefully.
- Focus: The dog watches you and the environment constantly. Give it tasks, such as heel, sit and wait at every gate, so the watching has a channel.
Tips for professional walkers
- Meet the dog at home with the owner and establish the rules before walking alone.
- Walk solo or with one known companion dog rather than a large group.
- Dry and comb the beard after wet walks; it holds water and smells quickly.
- Keep training cues consistent with the owner's; this breed notices sloppiness.
What to ask the owner
- What equipment is the dog walked on, and does it have a reliable stop or recall?
- How does it behave with strangers and visitors, and has it ever shown guarding behaviour on a walk?
- Which dogs does it tolerate, and is there any history of fights or same-sex aggression?
