Overview
The Slovak Rough-haired Pointer, or Slovensky Hrubosrsty Stavac, was developed after the Second World War from Weimaraner, Cesky Fousek and German Wirehaired Pointer lines. It is a tall, athletic gundog with a harsh grey or grey-brown coat, a beard and a willing, affectionate character. The UK Kennel Club recognised it on the import register in the 1990s and a small working community exists here.
The breed is biddable and people-focused, which makes training rewarding. It is also a dog bred to hunt all day and will become restless and destructive without enough to do. A walker who gives it structure will be rewarded with a lovely companion.
Exercise and walking needs
Between an hour and a half and two hours a day for a fit adult, with a good part of it off lead where safe. The breed ranges widely and covers ground fast, so it needs space rather than pavement.
Retrieving, scent work and controlled hunting games on a long line channel the drive. Water is welcome and most of these dogs swim readily.
On the walk
- Recall: Good when trained, but the hunting instinct is strong and game birds, deer and rabbits will test it. Build the recall in low-distraction places first.
- Pulling: Moderate to strong when the dog is keen to get going. A harness and a calm start make a difference.
- Other dogs: Generally friendly and sociable, with enthusiasm that suits active group walks with dogs of similar energy.
- Range: The dog likes to work well ahead and check in. Decide with the owner how far is acceptable and use a whistle if that is what it knows.
Tips for professional walkers
- Bring a dummy or ball and give the dog a retrieve or two; it satisfies the breed more than extra miles.
- Carry a towel and check the beard, ears and feet for seeds after a walk through crops or long grass.
- Use a long line in new places until you have seen the recall under pressure.
What to ask the owner
- Is the dog trained to a whistle, and what commands does it know for stop and recall?
- Does the dog have any history of chasing deer or livestock, and how far does it usually range?
- Is the dog allowed to swim, and is there a towel and drying routine the owner prefers?
