Overview
The South Russian Ovcharka, or Yuzhak, is a large, long-coated livestock guardian from the steppes of southern Ukraine and Russia. Its dense white or grey coat falls over the eyes and its size is deceptive under all that hair. It was bred to work with minimal human direction, making its own decisions about threats to the flock.
That independence and guarding instinct make it one of the most demanding breeds a walker is likely to be offered. The dog is loyal to its own people and deeply suspicious of everyone else, including other dogs and visitors to the house. It is a rare breed in the UK and not one for an inexperienced handler.
Exercise and walking needs
Around an hour and a quarter of steady walking a day suits an adult. The breed is not fast or playful; it moves with purpose, patrols its surroundings and conserves energy for when it decides it is needed.
The heavy coat is hot in summer and heavy when wet. Plan short, cool walks in warm weather and allow time for drying.
On the walk
- Recall: Not realistic in public. The dog chooses whether to respond, and a perceived threat will always win. Enclosed, private ground only.
- Pulling: Immense when motivated. A guardian that decides to move towards something cannot be stopped by a light handler, so equipment and route planning matter.
- Other dogs: Territorial and intolerant of strange dogs approaching. Avoid encounters entirely and never attempt group walks.
- Strangers: Will be watched and may be warned off. Keep well away from people, especially anyone who moves towards the handler.
Tips for professional walkers
- Only take this breed on after several supervised introductions with the owner, and be honest if you are not comfortable.
- Pick quiet, open routes at off-peak times where you can see other walkers early and turn away.
- Check the coat around the eyes and ears for debris and matting after each walk, reporting anything the owner should see.
What to ask the owner
- How does the dog respond to a new handler, and how long did it take to accept the last one?
- What stop and recall commands exist, and how reliable are they in practice?
- Has the dog ever reacted to a stranger or another dog on a walk, and what happened?
