Overview
The Liangshan Dog is a hunting breed from the Yi minority areas of south west China, where it tracks and bays game in steep, forested terrain. It is medium-sized and athletic with a short coat, often red or black, upright or semi-upright ears and the hard, no-nonsense look of a landrace dog that has not been softened for the pet market.
What a walker can reasonably expect is a dog with real stamina, a strong nose, a prey drive to match, and a cautious attitude to strangers. These are not city dogs by background, and one living in Britain will be an unusual animal with an owner who knows its quirks.
Exercise and walking needs
An hour and a half a day is a fair target for an adult, ideally with hills, woodland and plenty of scent to work. The breed was built to run all day over rock and through brush, and a flat lead walk will leave a lot of energy unspent.
A short coat and a lean body do not insulate well in wet British weather, so ask about a coat for winter and dry the dog off after rain.
On the walk
- Scent: Once the nose is down, the ears switch off. Work with it: let the dog track in safe places and keep the lead short near roads.
- Prey: Deer, rabbits, squirrels and cats are all fair game in the dog's mind. Anticipate hedgerows and woodland edges rather than reacting to them.
- Recall: Hunting landraces decide for themselves when to come back. Keep the dog on a long line unless the owner has demonstrated a reliable return.
- Other dogs: Reserved, and may not enjoy boisterous greetings. Start with a parallel walk alongside a calm dog and build from there.
Tips for professional walkers
- Use a secure harness with a second attachment point; a lunging dog can slip a collar.
- Choose routes with hills and cover to tire the dog honestly.
- Give the dog scent work on lead: hide treats, let it track a dragged toy.
- Keep first introductions to people and dogs at a distance and let the dog choose to close the gap.
What to ask the owner
- Has the dog been used for hunting, and what does it chase here?
- How does it react to other dogs and to strangers approaching?
- Does it have any recall at all, and where have you tested it?
