Overview
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as the Great Pyrenees in North America, is a livestock guardian from the French Pyrenees. It is a huge white dog with a thick weatherproof double coat, a calm expression and a double dewclaw on each hind leg. The UK Kennel Club lists it in the pastoral group alongside the herders.
Pyreneans are affectionate with their household, patient with children and quietly determined. Bred to make their own decisions guarding sheep through the night, they are not naturally obedient and they take their time about everything. They also bark, often, and especially after dark.
Exercise and walking needs
An hour a day in two unhurried walks is right for most adults. They do not need or want to run for miles. A good amble with sniffing, some gentle hills and time to watch the world suits them.
Heat is the enemy. Shorten walks in warm weather and go early. Snow and rain do not bother them at all.
On the walk
- Recall: Guardian breeds wander, and a Pyrenean that has decided to go somewhere will go. Off lead only in a secure space with the owner's agreement.
- Pulling: Generally relaxed on the lead, but fifty kilos of dog that wants to investigate a hedge will take you there. A harness and a steady grip.
- Other dogs: Mostly tolerant and gentle. Will stand its ground with a rude dog but rarely starts anything.
- Strangers: Watchful and protective rather than hostile. It may plant itself between you and a stranger. Give it time to assess.
- Coat: Thick and water shedding, but mud sticks and the feathering collects burrs. Towel and a quick brush-check.
Tips for professional walkers
- Walk early and slowly in summer and carry water.
- Do not expect speed. Build your schedule around the dog's pace.
- Keep the walk calm and predictable; this breed does not enjoy surprises.
- Check between the toes and the dewclaws for debris after walks.
What to ask the owner
- Does the dog bark at night or at passers-by, and are neighbours sensitive?
- Any hip or elbow issues, and has the vet given exercise limits?
- How does the dog react when a stranger approaches you directly?
