Overview
Basenjis were kept by forest peoples in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo to drive game into nets and hunt small animals. They are small, smooth and tightly curled of tail, with wrinkled foreheads and a trot like a thoroughbred. Instead of barking they yodel and chortle, and they groom themselves like cats.
The breed is a primitive hound in temperament as well as origin. It is affectionate on its own terms, deeply inquisitive, a gifted escape artist and not remotely interested in doing something just because you asked.
Exercise and walking needs
An hour a day in two walks is about right for most adults. Basenjis are quick and athletic but not endurance dogs, and they enjoy a mixture of exploring, sprinting and sniffing.
They dislike rain and cold and will often refuse to go out in a downpour. A coat helps, as does a short brisk route rather than a long muddy one.
On the walk
- Recall: Poor to non-existent when anything runs. Squirrels, cats and birds are a direct challenge. Keep the dog on lead or in a secure area.
- Other dogs: Selective. Many Basenjis are fine with dogs they know and quite sharp with those they do not, especially pushy ones.
- Escaping: They climb fences, slip collars and open gates. Check any enclosed space before letting go of the lead.
- Lead manners: Light and quick, with sudden lunges at prey. A harness with a secure fit is safer than a collar.
- Weather: Wet and cold are disliked. Expect a dog that walks on tiptoe round puddles and asks to go home.
Tips for professional walkers
- Use a well-fitted harness with a second point of attachment; Basenjis back out of collars.
- Pick routes with little wildlife and few cats, or accept you will be holding on to a very keen dog.
- Carry a coat for the dog from autumn to spring and offer short walks on wet days rather than long ones.
- Keep bags and pockets closed; the breed is a talented thief.
What to ask the owner
- Has the dog ever escaped from a garden or slipped a collar, and how did it happen?
- Which dogs does it tolerate, and has it had any fights?
- How does the owner handle wet weather, and does the dog have a coat?
