Overview
The Presa Canario, or Dogo Canario, is a large molosser from the Canary Islands, bred to hold cattle and guard farms. It is heavily built with a broad head, a short brindle or fawn coat and a calm, watchful bearing. It is not recognised by the UK Kennel Club.
A well-raised Presa is steady, quiet and deeply attached to its own household. It is also suspicious of strangers, confident around other dogs, and strong enough to overpower an adult. This is not a breed to take on without experience of guarding types and a careful introduction.
Exercise and walking needs
An hour to seventy five minutes a day in two walks suits most adults. They are not high energy in the Spaniel sense. Steady walking with a bit of hill work keeps them fit without stressing joints. Avoid heavy exercise in heat; the heavy body overheats.
Young Presas grow for a long time; ask the owner about joint-friendly limits on distance.
On the walk
- Lead: A strong, well-fitted harness or a head collar the dog is already trained on, and a short lead. You cannot out-muscle this dog, so management must be in the equipment and the route.
- Other dogs: Caution. Many Presas are indifferent to other dogs but some are intolerant, especially with the same sex. Walk alone and avoid on-lead greetings.
- Strangers: Aloof and watchful. Do not let people approach to pet without the owner's agreement. Keep distance from children you do not know.
- Heat: Big body, and a short muzzle in some lines. Early morning walks in summer and plenty of water.
Tips for professional walkers
- Insist on meeting the dog with the owner present and on several occasions before you walk it alone.
- Walk at quiet times in quiet places and avoid narrow paths where you cannot give other dogs space.
- Check your insurance policy wording; some policies exclude certain breeds.
- Carry a muzzle if the owner uses one and know how the dog accepts it.
What to ask the owner
- How does the dog react to strange dogs and strange people, and has it ever bitten?
- What equipment do they use, and is the dog trained to a head collar or muzzle?
- Who else has walked the dog successfully, and what did they do?
